Color Change Shellac aftercare: first 48 hours & summer tips

A lot of people come in for shellac as a quick reset, and we love that vibe. We hear it all the time, our team takes the time to let you choose your colour, and you leave feeling like you finally did something for you. Now the most important rule: keep your nails out of long soaks and skip hot tubs for the first 48 hours. That two-day window is when your finish tends to stay smooth, glossy, and less prone to lifting at the edges.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that prevent lifting
Right after your Color Change Shellac, we generally recommend treating your nails like they’re “set” but still settling. Quick handwashing is fine, but avoid anything that turns into a soak. Long hot showers, baths, dishes without gloves, and especially hot tubs can soften the edges and start that tiny lift that turns into peeling.
Do this for 2 days: short water exposure, gloves for chores, and cuticle oil morning and night. It’s simple, but it’s what keeps that crisp, clean edge.
Heat and cold can shift the look
Because this is a color-change finish, extreme heat or cold can make the shade flip faster and more dramatically. For the first 48 hours, try not to test it with super hot water, saunas, ice-cold plunges, or holding frozen items for long stretches. It doesn’t mean you can’t live your life. It just means your color tends to look more even when you don’t swing temperatures hard right away.
Hands off the edges
Don’t pick, peel, or file the shellac edge to “fix” a snag. That’s the fastest way to take off layers of your natural nail. If something feels off, let us know and we’ll take a look. Our Hamilton Mountain clients, especially around Concession Street after-work appointments, do best with a quick before-bed routine instead of trying to fuss with a nail during the day.
Your first week in Hamilton: sweat, sun, chores, and pool season
Shellac is built for real life. People tell us their hands and feet “look and feel great” after a shellac mani and pedi, and that’s exactly the point. But week one is where habits decide if your set stays glassy or starts catching on hair and clothing.
If you’re active, keep it simple
Heavy sweating and heat can soften the skin around the nail, which makes picking more tempting and can make the edges wear sooner. For workouts, bring a small towel so you’re not rubbing nails hard on clothing, and wash hands after, then moisturize. A lot of our Hamilton clients are juggling kids, commutes, and weekend escarpment hikes. You don’t need complicated steps. Just don’t treat your nails like tools.
Summer pool rules (chlorine is the sneaky one)
Chlorinated pools and long sun exposure can dry your cuticles out fast. If you swim, rinse your hands after, pat dry, and apply moisturizer or cuticle oil when you’re done. If you’re heading into a hot tub, wait until after that first 48-hour window. And if you’re in and out of pools all summer, plan on keeping your appointments consistent so your nails stay healthy underneath.
The 2-product routine that protects Color Change Shellac
If you do nothing else, do these two things. They’re quick, they’re realistic, and they make a noticeable difference in how long your Color Change Shellac looks fresh.
1) Cuticle oil twice daily. Morning and before bed is perfect. It keeps the skin flexible so you’re less likely to get hangnails and less likely to pick.
2) Gloves for wet work and cleaning. Dish soap and cleaners dry nails and skin out. Gloves are the easiest “aftercare hack” for busy households.
And one more habit: use the pads of your fingers, not your nails, to open cans, peel stickers, or scrape anything. If you’re coming in for our 20-minute, $24 Color Change Shellac refresh, this is how you keep it looking like day one without adding extra time to your schedule.
If something feels “off, ” we’ll talk you through it (and fix it)
Most of the time, what you’ll notice is simple: your nails still look glossy, your cuticles feel a bit dry, and you just need to oil them more consistently. But reach out if you see lifting that’s spreading, a crack that’s catching on hair, or you’re tempted to peel. We’d rather remove and redo a problem nail than have you pull at it and damage the natural nail underneath.

Color Change Shellac aftercare FAQs (the quick answers)
How long should I wait to get my hands wet after Color Change Shellac?
You can wash your hands normally right away. The key is avoiding long soaking for the first 48 hours. Keep showers shorter, skip baths and dishes without gloves, and don’t sit with your hands in water.
Can I go swimming or use a hot tub after Color Change Shellac?
We generally recommend waiting 48 hours before hot tubs and long pool sessions. If you do swim after that, rinse your hands after, pat dry, and moisturize. Chlorine dries out the cuticle area fast.
Will heat or cold permanently alter my Color Change Shellac color?
Color-change finishes are made to react to temperature, so you’ll see shifts with hot and cold. That isn’t usually permanent damage. For the first 48 hours, avoid extreme temperature swings so your finish stays even and the edges stay sealed.
How do I remove Color Change Shellac safely at the salon?
Don’t peel it off at home. We’ll remove shellac the safe way so the product lifts without taking layers of your natural nail with it. If an edge is lifting, let us know and come in for removal or a fix instead of picking.
How often should I schedule a refill or removal for Color Change Shellac?
Most people book removal or a refresh every 2 to 3 weeks. That timing keeps your nails looking even as they grow out and helps protect the natural nail bed.
