Back IPL Aftercare: Your First-Week Do's and Don'ts

By Elva Medical Aesthetics | September 24, 2026

I’m big on education in the room, the same way Abby does when she explains the service and talks through your skin concerns. And for Back IPL, the #1 rule right after your appointment is simple: keep your back cool, clean, and out of the sun. In Hamilton, ON, that matters year-round, but especially on bright days when you’re out on the Mountain and the UV sneaks up fast.

Back IPL aftercare in the first week: do's and don'ts for post-IPL care on the back

Back IPL is a 30-minute appointment ($248) that targets uneven tone and dark spots, and it also supports collagen for a smoother-looking back over time. Aftercare is what protects that work. If you’re commuting via the Red Hill Valley Parkway, wearing a backpack, or heading straight to family activities, the first week is all about reducing heat, friction, and sun exposure so your skin can settle properly.

First 24 to 48 hours: cool it down, then leave it alone

Right after Back IPL, mild warmth, pinkness, and a “sun-kissed” look can happen. I generally recommend treating the area gently and keeping your routine boring for a couple of days.

Quick rules that save results: avoid hot showers/baths, saunas, pools, hot tubs, and heavy sweating for 48 to 72 hours. Heat and chlorine are the two most common reasons skin stays irritated longer than it needs to.

Do this on Day 0 and Day 1

  • Use a cool compress for 5 to 10 minutes at a time if you feel heat or tightness. Don’t ice directly on skin.
  • Keep showers lukewarm. Let water run over your back and pat dry. No scrubbing cloths or loofahs.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing. If you’re in uniform for work or you’re buckled in for a long drive, add a soft layer under straps to reduce rubbing.
  • Skip deodorant sprays, fragrances, and body sprays on the treated area.

Avoid this on Day 0 and Day 1

  • Hot yoga, runs, or heavy lifting that leaves your back sweaty.
  • Sun exposure. Even “just a bit” adds up fast, especially during Hamilton’s warm, humid months.
  • Any picking or rubbing. If you feel bumps or rough texture, it’s usually temporary.

Days 3 to 7: the “no actives” week that keeps your skin calm

This is the week where people accidentally sabotage their results with “just one exfoliating shower” or “just a quick sunny walk.” I’d rather you stay gentle for a full seven days, then get back to your normal routine gradually.

If Abby (or any of us) reviewed your concerns and recommended a plan, stick to the timing. Back IPL plays well with simple routines. Strong products too soon are the usual reason people end up extra dry or irritated.

What I want you to avoid for about a week

  • Exfoliants and strong actives: retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, scrubs, and rough exfoliating gloves.
  • Waxing, plucking, or chemical hair removal on the treated area.
  • Long hot showers and baths. Keep it warm, not steaming.

What you should keep doing

  • Cleanse gently and moisturize daily with a fragrance-free lotion or cream.
  • Protect your back from friction. Seatbelts, sports bras, backpacks, and even escarpment hikes can rub when you’re sweaty.
  • Use sun protection daily, even if you think your back is “covered most of the time.”

SPF 30+ on your back in Hamilton is non-negotiable

If you remember one habit after Back IPL, make it this: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every single day until your skin fully settles, usually 1 to 2 weeks. Hamilton’s seasonal sun is real, and humidity can make you sweat, which means you’re more likely to rub or wipe the area without thinking.

My simple back routine for the first week

  • AM: gentle cleanse if needed, then SPF if your back will be exposed. If not exposed, cover with clothing and still be cautious near windows and outdoor time.
  • PM: gentle cleanse and fragrance-free moisturizer.

Real-life tip for Hamilton Mountain families: if you’re out at the park or walking the Mountain stairs, toss a lightweight shirt in the car. Covering your back reduces the need to constantly reapply SPF on a hard-to-reach area.

And yes, I get it. A lot of people find us while searching for facial near me or waxing near me, then they realize back care is the missing piece. Back IPL aftercare is easy when you keep it simple.

Peeling, scabbing, and “is this normal?” questions I’m happy to answer

A little dryness is common. Some people notice light flaking or a slightly rough feel as the skin settles. What I don’t want you doing is picking, scrubbing it off, or throwing acids on it to “speed it up.” Let it pass on its own and keep moisturizing.

Reach out right away if you see any of these

  • Blistering or open areas
  • Spreading redness that’s getting worse, not better
  • Increasing pain, heat, or pus

I serve Hamilton Mountain (Concession Street area) and I also talk with plenty of clients coming in from Stoney Creek, Dundas, Ancaster, Burlington, Flamborough, and Waterdown. If something feels off, I’d rather you message or call and get a clear answer than sit at home worrying.

I’ll stay in your corner after your Back IPL, not just during the 30 minutes

A lot of people tell me the reason they keep coming back is the way we explain things and take anxiety out of trying something new. That’s the vibe I want for your Back IPL too. You shouldn’t leave guessing what’s okay and what’s not.

"The first time I got my lashes done she explained everything to me which helped ease my anxiety of trying something new."

one of our regulars

If you want to pair skin-smoothing goals with other services you already love, I’m happy to map that out. People often ask about facials, dermaplaning, hydra facial, microneedling near me, waxing, laser hair removal, lashes extensions, body contouring near me, and even a manicure or pedicure for a full reset. I’ll tell you what to book now, what to wait on, and what actually makes sense with your IPL timing.

Quick logistics for Hamilton Mountain: friction, commuting, and after-work plans

If you’re squeezing appointments in after work and hopping right back into life on Concession Street or driving home via the Red Hill Valley Parkway, plan for two things: heat and friction. Bring a clean, loose top to change into. If you wear a backpack, give it a break for a day or two. If you’re an escarpment-hike person, keep it easy until sweating is minimal.
