12 Week Retouch Aftercare: Clear Do's and Don'ts for Permanent Makeup
By Elva Medical Aesthetics | September 22, 2026
I hear it all the time after a “pain-free, quick” appointment and a result you’re already happy with: “Tell me exactly what to do so I don’t mess this up.” Here’s the single most important rule for 12 week retouch aftercare: for the first 24 to 48 hours, keep the area clean and mostly dry, avoid heavy sweating and direct sun, and use only the gentle cleanser and a thin layer of balm I recommend.
If you’re healing in Hamilton, the humid summer days and strong late-summer sun can make aftercare trickier. I’ll walk you through a realistic, day-by-day plan that fits busy schedules on Hamilton Mountain, including the Concession Street area.
Quick context: Our 12 Week Retouch is a 120-minute touch-up appointment within 12 weeks of your original treatment to maintain color and shape. It’s $145, and it’s the visit that often takes “pretty good” into “perfect love it.”
First 24 to 48 hours: keep it clean, keep it calm
Right after your retouch, your skin is doing one job: sealing back up. Your job is to protect that. I generally recommend you treat the area like a fresh, delicate surface, no rubbing, no soaking, no “let me just wash my face like normal.”
Do
- Use short, gentle cleanses only if needed, then pat dry. Think “quick and careful, ” not a long wash.
- Apply a thin layer of the balm I recommend. More balm is not better.
- Sleep in a way that avoids face-smushing, and keep hair products away from the treated area.
Don’t
- Don’t soak the area in the shower, bath, or at the sink. Avoid steamy, long showers too.
- Don’t exercise hard or do anything that causes heavy sweating. This matters a lot in Hamilton’s humid summers.
- Don’t put makeup, sunscreen, or active skincare on the treated area yet.
If you commute up the Mountain and you’ve booked after-work near Concession Street, plan a calm evening after your appointment. Skip the gym that night, keep dinner simple, and let the area settle.
Days 3 to 14: flaking is normal, picking is not
Around day 3, a lot of people panic because the color can look uneven, lighter, or like it’s “disappearing.” That’s part of the surface healing cycle. What you do here has a direct impact on how smooth and even your healed result looks.
Your rules for the first week
- Hands off. No picking, scratching, or “helping” flakes along. That’s how patchy healing happens.
- Keep using only a thin balm layer if the area feels tight or dry. Over-applying can clog and slow healing.
- Avoid pools, hot tubs, saunas, and tanning beds for 2 weeks. Chlorine, heat, and bacteria are not your friends right now.
- Avoid direct sun for 2 weeks. Hamilton’s late-summer sun is strong. Save SPF for after the surface is fully healed.
I love seeing people leave feeling confident about their shape, and I’ve had clients tell me I “took the time to make sure” they liked the look and that it was even. Aftercare is how you protect that effort at home.
Products to pause for 4 weeks (and what to use instead)
For permanent makeup touch up aftercare, product choices matter because the skin is still settling under the surface even after flakes are gone.
Retouch aftercare tip: Skip facial treatments, peels, laser, or strong actives (retinol, AHA/BHA) around the treated area for 4 weeks. That includes booking dermaplaning, a hydra facial, or microneedling near me searches that turn into a last-minute appointment. Let this heal first.
Keep it simple
Use only the gentle cleanser and balm I recommend for the treated area. For the rest of your face, keep your routine mild and avoid drifting active products onto the retouched zone. If you also come to me for facials, waxing, waxing near me services, lashes extensions, body contouring near me, a manicure, or a pedicure, I’ll help you space things out so you’re not healing from multiple services at once in the same spot.
When to message me, and when a quick check-in helps
A little redness and mild swelling right after your appointment is common and usually settles fast. But I don’t want you guessing. If you notice prolonged redness, intense pain, discharge, or unusual pigment loss, reach out so I can guide you.
“The first time I got my lashes done she explained everything to me which helped ease my anxiety of trying something new.”
one of our regulars
That’s the same energy I bring to your permanent makeup follow-up. If you’re coming in from Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas, or Burlington, it’s easy to schedule a quick check-in at our Hamilton Mountain clinic so you feel confident that healing is on track.
Friendly reminder: A consultation is required before procedures. If you’re planning future services, like laser hair removal or eyeliner options (lash enhancement, full liner, or top and bottom), I’ll help you time everything so your skin stays happy.

FAQs: 12 Week Retouch aftercare questions I get daily
How soon can I wash my face after a 12 Week Retouch?
I generally want you to keep the treated area mostly dry for the first 24 to 48 hours. If you need to cleanse, do a short, gentle cleanse and pat dry. Avoid letting water run directly over the area in the shower.
Can I go to the gym or sweat after my 12 Week Retouch?
I recommend avoiding heavy sweating for the first 24 to 48 hours, and being cautious for the first week. Sweat and heat can irritate the area and slow healing. In Hamilton’s humid summer weather, it often means choosing lighter walks instead of intense workouts for a few days.
Can I apply makeup over my retouched area?
Not right away. Avoid makeup on the treated area for at least 7 to 14 days, or until the surface looks fully healed with no flaking. Makeup can introduce bacteria and disrupt the healing surface.
How long will redness or swelling last after a 12 Week Retouch?
Mild redness or swelling is common right after your appointment and usually settles quickly. If redness, pain, or discharge persists or worsens, message me so I can advise you and decide if you need to come in.
Will this 12 Week Retouch require another follow-up?
Many people do great after their 12-week retouch and simply maintain later with future touch-ups as needed. If anything looks unusual during healing, I’d rather you check in so we can make a plan that protects your long-term result.
