12 month retouch aftercare: first 48 hours and a 2-week plan
By Elva Medical Aesthetics | October 20, 2026
Quick context: I hear “pain-free” and “quick” a lot after permanent brow work here. After your 12 Month Retouch in Hamilton, the biggest rule is simple: keep the area clean and mostly dry for the first 24 to 48 hours so the pigment can settle the way it’s supposed to.
A 12 Month Retouch is a 120-minute appointment to refresh pigment and keep your results looking like you, just more put-together. It’s also the appointment where aftercare makes the difference between “perfect, love it” and “why did it fade weird?” Below is the exact timeline I give my own clients at our Hamilton Mountain (Concession Street area) clinic, especially for busy commuters who want minimal downtime and don’t want to babysit their brows.
If you’re planning ahead, you can also read the benefits of a 12 Month Retouch to understand why this refresh works so well when it’s timed properly.
First 24 to 48 hours: keep it calm, clean, and mostly dry
Right after your permanent makeup retouch, your skin is doing a quick repair job. I generally recommend treating the area like a fresh, superficial wound. No soaking. No rubbing. No “let me just fix it” moments in the mirror.
Do this today and tomorrow: Keep the area clean and mostly dry, apply a very thin layer of the recommended ointment only as I instructed, and keep your hands off the pigment.
The short list of “yes”
- Blot gently if you notice light weeping. I’ll show you how before you leave.
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase and try not to press your face into it.
- Keep hair products, sunscreen, and skincare away from the area unless I specifically cleared it.
The “no” list that saves your result
- No makeup on or over the retouched area.
- No heavy sweating, hot yoga, saunas, or steam.
- No swimming, hot tubs, or long hot showers that fog up the bathroom.
If you’re on Hamilton Mountain (Concession Street area) and you’re getting in after work, this part is actually easy. Do the simple stuff at home, keep it clean, and let the skin do its job. If you commute via the Red Hill Valley Parkway, plan to keep a clean blotting tissue and your aftercare on hand, and avoid touching the area in the car.
Days 3 to 7: flaking happens, and picking is the fastest way to lose pigment
This is the week that tests people. Your retouched area often looks darker, then it starts to look patchy or dry, and then you’ll see flaking. That’s normal. The goal is to let the flakes shed on their own so the colour heals evenly.
A reminder I repeat in clinic: If I took time to make sure you liked the shape and it was even, protect that work by leaving the healing skin alone. Don’t scratch. Don’t pick. Don’t “help it.”
What to avoid for permanent makeup retouch aftercare
- Facials, dermaplaning, hydra facial appointments, microneedling near me searches, and anything exfoliating near the area for at least 2 weeks.
- Active skincare near the area, including retinol and glycolic acids, until fully healed.
- Oily makeup and heavy creams sitting on the retouched skin.
Hamilton weather matters here. In cooler October weather, sweat risk tends to be lower, but indoor heat can dry your skin out fast. If your skin feels tight, talk to me before you add products. In warmer months, the big issue is sweat and sun. Keep workouts light, and protect your skin from UV exposure once it’s healed.
Weeks 2 to 4: colour settles, fades a bit, and then looks like “you” again
If you’re asking “what to do after 12 month retouch” because you’re staring at the mirror on day 10, this is your reassurance: the colour doesn’t stay at the darkest stage. It typically lightens as the top layer finishes healing, and then it settles into a softer version of what you saw right after the appointment.
A retouch is usually less intense than the initial session. Healing tends to be milder and quicker, but the rules stay the same at the start because your skin still needs clean conditions and low irritation.
Back to workouts
I generally recommend skipping intense cardio and heavy sweating for 7 to 14 days. Light walking is usually fine sooner if you’re not overheating.
Back to water
Avoid pools, hot tubs, and long soaks for 7 to 14 days. If you’re unsure, I’d rather you ask than guess.
Back to “getting ready”
Hold off on makeup over the area until the skin is no longer flaky or tender. That timing is often 7 to 14 days.
If you’re coming in from Stoney Creek, Dundas, Ancaster, Burlington, Flamborough, or Waterdown, plan your follow-up questions early. It’s easier to fix a small irritation quickly than to let it drag out for a week.
Products and habits that protect your retouch (and what I want you to pause)
For 12 month retouch aftercare, less is usually more. Use only the cleanser and ointment I recommended for you. A thick layer doesn’t heal you faster. It often causes extra softness in the skin, and that can interfere with how evenly pigment holds.
Pause these around the area until you’re fully healed: retinol, glycolic acids, strong acne treatments, and scrubs. If you book facials, waxing, waxing near me appointments, laser hair removal, or body contouring near me services, tell me what you’re scheduling so I can guide timing around your healing skin.
And yes, your other appointments can still happen. A manicure or pedicure is usually fine. Lashes extensions are usually fine too, as long as we’re not putting products on the healing area and you’re not steaming your face. If you’re unsure, ask me and I’ll give you a straight answer.
If something feels “off, ” reach out early (I actually mean it)
Some redness, mild swelling, and tenderness are common at first. What I don’t want you to ignore is increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or unusual discharge. If that’s happening, message or call us. I’d rather look at a photo and reassure you than have you stressing at home.
“The first time I got my lashes done she explained everything to me which helped ease my anxiety of trying something new. Everyone who works at Elva is very kind and professional. The owner you can tell she genuinely cares about her clients.”

Friendly reminder: Touch-ups cost $195 at 12 months, and this appointment is meant to keep your pigment looking fresh. If you’re not sure if what you’re seeing is normal settling, reach out and I’ll talk you through it.
I’m on Concession Street in Hamilton Mountain, and it’s easy to get to us after commuting on the Red Hill Valley Parkway. If you’re coming in from Burlington, Ancaster, Dundas, Waterdown, Flamborough, or Stoney Creek, plan a little time for parking and ask anything you need during your visit. I’m here for the long game, not a one-and-done appointment.
